A Quick Glance at Teeth Whitening

When it comes to dental treatment, teeth whitening is undoubtedly among the most popular procedures. The number of individuals opting for the service has been soaring as evidenced by a surge in dental visits, online searches, and inquiries. Statistics indicate that this is the number one reason for people visiting the dental clinic. Though it has been practiced for many decades, a number of people are not very familiar with the technique and how it would work on them.

What Is Teeth Whitening?

Also known as bleaching, teeth whitening begins with the removal or scraping of some material off the surface of the teeth. The top surface known as the enamel gets stained over time and the color of the teeth change from white to yellowish or brownish. The procedure is non-invasive and can be done using several processes. One process involves gently scraping very small material off the teeth while another entails wearing some molds or impressions containing a special solution or bleach for some time. Stained teeth contribute to the effects on people and causes them to lose their self-esteem and will avoid smiling or laughing, especially in public.

What Causes Stained Teeth?

The number one reason for whitening or bleaching teeth is to remove the stain that affects the enamel. Stains come in all forms with some affecting some spots or teeth while others affect the entire tooth or the whole mouth. Some people will be born with stained teeth while in others, the problem develops over time. Fluorosis is among the commonest causes and occurs due to heavy buildup of fluoride on the teeth surface. This is due to drinking water containing high concentration of fluoride. Excessive smoking of tobacco products such as cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and drinking lots of coffee can also make the teeth change color to yellow or brown. Some medical conditions may also affect the enamel’s color.

What Does Whitening of Teeth Involve?

There are several methods of teeth whitening and each technique targets the enamel. The most effective is the in office power bleach.  This is when we remove surface stains first and then use the dental bleaching material in a controlled environment to penetrate the enamel to remove surface and deeper stains.. Though simple and straightforward, it is only suitable for healthy teeth that have a strong enamel. Another popular method involves making impressions or molds in the shape of the patient’s teeth. Thereafter, a whitening solution is inserted and a person wears them for 30 minutes overnight or twice daily. The time period varies depending with the intensity of the staining and sensitivity of their teeth.

Whitening or bleaching teeth has helped many people regain their self-confidence, as they can freely mingle with other people without the feelings of embarrassment. Nonetheless, the procedure is not permanent and will need to be repeated at a later period. It is paramount to find with a reputable and skilled dentist to minimize any risks and get the best service. Here at Artista Dental Studio, every smile is a work of art.
